Many boys and girls at the very young ages of 11-13 were conscripted to be soldiers or sex-slaves of various guerrilla groups. They are now being rehabilitated in a camp run by the Jesuit Refugee Service in Uvira, a city in eastern Congo, across the border from Bujumbura the capital of Burundi.

The Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel featured my photographs at Marquette University's Haggerty Art Museum.

Check the opening paragraph: "No man can serve two masters, the Gospel of Matthew declares, but a Jesuit photographer is proving that some men can make two vocations work together nicely.

The work of photographer Don Doll is featured in "The Grandeur of God: Photographs by Don Doll, S.J." on exhibit January 30 through April 13 at Marquette University's Haggerty Museum of Art."

When I was in Rome last month to photograph the General Congregation 35, my friend, Tom Rochford, S.J., interviewed me for his Jesuit Voices site - MP3, 24 min, available on Magis.

"Murmuratio" as it is known in Latin is the process by which the GC35 delegations basically pray and fast as they discuss with one another possible candidates for the head of the Jesuit order.

Ernesto Travieso and I caught a train to Robert Cook's studio in the countryside about an hour north of Rome. We had met in 1977 in my first visit to Rome. Jenny, his daughter, cooked a wonderful, healthy pranzo, the noon meal. Bob showed his studio created in a former basement wine cellar.

On New Year's Day, I photographed the dedication of the new chapel in the Writer's house which features newly created murals by Fr. Marko Rupnik, S.J., who gave the homily [Listen in Italian (15 min)] explaining the symbolism he had used. Fr. Peter Hans Kolvenbach, Superior General of the Jesuits, said the mass and blessed the altar.

Rome - Peter Canisius Jesuit Community Chapel - 01/02/2008

My good friend Ernesto Travieso met me at Leonardo DaVinci airport, and brought my photographic gear and me to the Curia, i.e., the Jesuit Headquarters, in Rome.

On New Year's Eve, Ernesto and I went one city block over to St. Peter's to see the life sized Nativity scene. We then walked over to Piazza Navone, and the Pantheon. Later that evening from the fifth floor roof we joined the community to watch the fireworks as Romans around the city welcomed in the New Year!

After hearing Pope Benedict’s noon address at St. Peter’s, I was invited by Fr. Kolvenbach and Jim Grummer, the American assistant to the general, to pranzo, the main noon meal,

In the afternoon, I joined two other Jesuits, Bill Oulvey and Tom Rochford, for walk along the Tiber river to Piazza Populo to see a variety of circus-like performers.

Later in the evening, Ernesto and I walked to the Jesuit Church, St. Ignatius, to listen to a choral concert by an American group. A full day indeed.
