Child Soldiers in the Congo
Child Soldiers in the Congo
Many boys and girls at the very young ages of 11-13 were conscripted to be soldiers or sex-slaves of various guerrilla groups. They are now being rehabilitated in a camp run by the Jesuit Refugee Service in Uvira, a city in eastern Congo, across the border from Bujumbura the capital of Burundi.

"Magis" [pronounced "màh-gis"] is a Latin word for "more," and is taken from the motto of the Jesuits, "Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam" which is translated, "For the Greater Glory of God."

As the guiding principle for decision-making for all trained in Ignatian spirituality, one decides in favor of a course of action that is a "more" generous response to God's call, and thus for His greater glory.

Magis|Productions takes on projects that are for the 'greater glory . . .' such as Vision Quest in which the intention was to give 'voice' to Native American people, or the landmine photos supporting the ban against landmines, or photography to show how Jesuits are living out their mission of promoting faith and social justice.

Most recently I returned from Eastern Africa where I photographed for the Jesuit Refugee Service in Burundi, Rwanda and the Congo. I also visited Jesuits in Uganda, Tanzania and Kenya. Visit Travel Blog. Or click on the image 'View my Travels' below.

Doll exhibit featured in Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel
The Milwaukee Journal/Sentinel featured my photographs at Marquette University's Haggerty Art Museum.

Check the opening paragraph: "No man can serve two masters, the Gospel of Matthew declares, but a Jesuit photographer is proving that some men can make two vocations work together nicely.

The work of photographer Don Doll is featured in "The Grandeur of God: Photographs by Don Doll, S.J." on exhibit January 30 through April 13 at Marquette University's Haggerty Museum of Art."

When I was in Rome last month to photograph the General Congregation 35, my friend, Tom Rochford, S.J., interviewed me for his Jesuit Voices site - MP3, 24 min, available on Magis.
